Dolphin watching in Hurghada: the trip, the price and the limits

Updated September 12, 2026 · 5 min read

Two snorkellers beside a coral reef

Book a dolphin trip in Hurghada only if you would enjoy the day at sea without seeing dolphins. That is the main test when choosing. A yacht with islands and lunch and a speedboat with several stops offer different days; neither the duration nor a high review score turns a wild animal into a fixed item on the itinerary.

One example in our catalogue dated 12 September 2026 is the “3 Islands, Dolphins & Snorkel” yacht trip, number 888318: from €44 per person, eight hours, a 4.7 rating and 8,267 reviews. The shorter alternative, 290630, starts at €33.25 per person and lasts four hours. The next step is to identify which parts of the day you are paying for and which expectations remain unconfirmed.

The yacht: dolphins within a full day out

The short description for 888318 lists dolphin watching, Orange Bay, Giftun, Magawish, snorkelling and a seafood lunch. It mentions shared and private formats. A starting price per person does not mean hiring the entire yacht: select a private option explicitly and check its total price. View the yacht trip and its options

This is worth considering for the combination of time at sea, swimming and an island route. If the animals do not appear, there are other reasons to spend the day away from your hotel. However, do not turn the list of names into your own schedule of landings. Eight hours describes the excursion; searching, snorkelling and beach time fit within it. Ask what changes without a dolphin sighting and which stops belong to the version you pay for.

Two adults would pay €88 at the starting rate, before possible extras. That is a useful budget reference, not a complete day price. Establish pickup from your particular hotel, included fees and drinks. A seafood lunch does not confirm a suitable dish for someone with dietary restrictions: agree the menu before paying.

The speedboat: less time, a different pace

The title of 290630 includes dolphins, snorkelling and two islands. For two adults, prices start at €66.50, which is €21.50 below the yacht above; its catalogue duration is half as long. It has a 4.6 rating from 4,085 reviews. This compares starting prices in one catalogue snapshot, rather than a fixed saving on every travel date. Check the four-hour speedboat trip

Consider the speedboat if a full day at sea takes too much of your schedule. Four hours does not mean four hours alongside dolphins. Travel between locations and snorkelling also take time. Nor should you assume a faster boat produces more encounters: the available information contains no sighting statistics that support that conclusion.

Comfort cannot be inferred from the word “speedboat” either. Ask about seats, overhead shade and a toilet on the actual vessel assigned. If someone values resting on deck more than the ride itself, start with our speedboat and excursion yacht comparison.

What the absence of a guarantee means

Dolphin Watch Alliance works with dolphins around Hurghada. It explicitly identifies understanding that sightings cannot be guaranteed as a feature of a responsible operator. Its guidance explains why animal welfare should shape the outing and is more useful than promotional percentages. Guidance on choosing an operator

This does not create an automatic refund if no animals appear. Your booking conditions determine that. Before paying, establish whether the service is considered delivered after a boat trip without sightings, and whether your chosen option expressly promises a repeat trip. Do not treat such a promise as a general Hurghada policy; keep its wording if it is actually offered.

Watching from the boat and swimming near dolphins are also different expectations. The word “dolphins” in a title does not confirm entering the water near them. If that particular experience matters to you, ask about the conditions and the option to decline. Booking solely for a photograph right beside an animal is a poor choice because the result depends on more than the fare you pay.

Assessing the operator before departure

A useful question is what the crew does when animals are resting or moving away. An explanation of observation procedures and the briefing tells you more than “we will definitely see them”. Dolphin Watch Alliance publishes a local code of conduct based on Red Sea research. Use it to discuss the crew’s approach; invented distances or sweeping bans are no substitute. Code of conduct

Read beyond the review stars. Look for accounts of how the crew responded without a sighting, explained the programme and managed observation. One delighted report does not establish a probability. Equally, a complaint about missing dolphins alone does not demonstrate poor organisation. What matters is how the actual day matches the service advertised.

When another excursion makes more sense

If a child agrees to go only because of dolphins, discuss the possibility of seeing none first. Operators set different age limits, shown on the relevant booking page. Confirm suitably sized children’s life jackets, shade and a toilet separately. Take questions about seasickness and sun protection to a pharmacist or paediatrician.

Save the selected option’s name with the operator’s answers. After payment, you can then see whether you discussed a shared day at sea or a separate private route for your party.

If your main aim is seeing a reef, compare snorkelling trips by time in the water and supervision. If you want to stay dry, consider a vessel with an underwater viewing cabin. Before booking a dolphin trip, answer one specific question: which parts of this day would you willingly pay for even if the animals never appeared?
