Hurghada with a wheelchair: what’s documented, what’s still open – and the questions to put in writing before you book

The most important point first, because everything else builds on it: not one of the short descriptions of the 224 tours we compare for Hurghada says a word about whether a wheelchair can come along. Not for the boats, not in the desert, not on the trips to Luxor and Cairo.

That doesn’t mean nothing works. It means this page can only pass on what an operator, a venue or a museum states itself, and that you should get every one of these statements confirmed before booking – ideally in writing and with a photo of the point of access. Anyone who’s stuck at the harbour in a wheelchair, unable to get on the boat, hasn’t had a bad day – they’ve had a wasted one.

What the booking page says – and what it means

On GetYourGuide’s booking pages, some listings note “wheelchair accessible” among the key facts. That’s a statement from the operator, not an inspection. It doesn’t say whether the transfer bus has a ramp, whether the jetty has steps, or whether you have to wade ashore at the island.

So the same rule applies to every tour: read the note, then ask. The questions we’d ask beforehand are at the end of this article.

Arrival: airport and transfer

Arrange the assistance you need for arrival and departure at Hurghada with your airline in advance. Have help to the agreed meeting point and carriage of your wheelchair confirmed.

A transfer described as “private” in Hurghada is not enough. Ask the booked operator to confirm the actual vehicle with a photo, its ramp or lift, door dimensions and wheelchair restraints. Explicitly check whether you must transfer to a vehicle seat.

The hotel decides the week

For a wheelchair holiday, the details of the room matter. If you are considering JAZ Makadi Oasis in Makadi Bay, ask the hotel to confirm door widths, manoeuvring space, the shower and any shower chair you need in writing before booking. The operator page checked here does not establish that your booked room has a level-access shower. JAZ

What no hotel description reveals is what the route from the room to the beach looks like. Depending on the beach in Hurghada, you enter the water via a jetty or over sand; the details are covered in Family-friendly beaches in Hurghada. We couldn’t find a beach wheelchair documented for any specific hotel in Hurghada. Asking costs nothing.

Routes in the city

The Marina. Hurghada Marina Boulevard has restaurants beside the yacht harbour. For an evening with a pushchair or wheelchair, ask your chosen restaurant to confirm the route from the taxi drop-off to the table and toilets, including steps and ramps. A continuously step-free promenade has not been verified here.

El Mamsha. The tourist promenade runs between hotels, cafés and shops. Plan a short section from your hotel and ask to see the access route, including kerbs and road crossings; a continuously step-free route has not been verified. Sheraton Road in Sakkala is a street with traffic, not a continuous walkway; for a specific restaurant, ask to be shown the drop-off point and the route over kerbs. El Dahar, the old town with the bazaar, is a different destination from the hotel promenade: check beforehand how close the taxi can get to the area you want and what the ground is like there. On the water: what’s documented and what isn’t

For the big island trips to Orange Bay or the Giftun Islands, we found no reliable report on what boarding at the jetty looks like or how you get ashore on the island. The Royal Seascope observation cabin is below the waterline. Before booking, have access, every step and storage for your mobility aid confirmed for the specific vessel. Its two-hour duration alone does not establish accessibility.

Places to visit on land

The Hurghada Grand Aquarium describes itself as wheelchair accessible, except for the suspension bridge. There are no wheelchairs to borrow there, but there are benches. With a disability card, there’s a 50% discount – only for the cardholder, not for their companion. In our comparison, the ticket costs from €30.09. Luxor and Cairo

Both destinations mean a long drive first: for the roughly 300 kilometres to Luxor, the local operator HurghadaToGo reckons on four to six hours each way; Cairo is around 450 kilometres. HurghadaToGo

Karnak and the Valley of the Kings: Ask which paths and tombs on your specific Luxor tour are accessible with your wheelchair. Older reports of alterations establish neither current conditions nor the suitability of a particular tomb. Luxor day trip from Hurghada

The questions to put in writing

• Does the transfer vehicle have a ramp or a lift – or do I need to transfer myself? Please send a photo.
• How do I get from the jetty onto the boat: a level plank, steps, a rear ladder?
• Is there a toilet on board that I can reach?
• How do you get ashore at the island – via a jetty or through the water?
• Can a companion travel free or at a reduced rate?
• What happens if it doesn’t work out on site: do I get my money back?

The last question is the most important one. Free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance is common with many offers, but it’s no help once you’re at the jetty.

When we’d advise against it

Booking the big island day without the operator confirming boarding. This is the case where the most can go wrong.
