Hurghada with a toddler (2–5 years): the hardest age, and what still works well here

With a child between two and five, the short trip is the right choice in Hurghada: a camel ride, an hour on a horse, shallow water. A whole day on the water — the Paradise Island Snorkeling Cruise with Lunch, at least seven hours, from €28.05 per person, rated 4.6 across 1,239 reviews — is only worth booking if your child can last that long. Two to five is the hardest age in Hurghada. A baby sleeps and can be carried, a school-age child snorkels and can handle a full day on a boat. In between is a child who runs everywhere, wants to touch everything, still naps at midday, cannot swim confidently, and starts asking after forty minutes in the car when you will finally arrive.
The good news: Hurghada has quite a lot to offer at this age – shallow lagoons such as the one at Orange Bay, warm water, and many trips that last only one to three hours and start below ten euros.
The shallow water is the real reason to be here
Orange Bay on Giftun has a pale sandy beach and a lagoon that the local dive centre Aquarius describes as shallow, warm and clear, suitable for children and non-swimmers to paddle in. Aquarius For a child who cannot yet swim, it is a good spot – with a swimming aid and an adult alongside.

Snorkelling: don’t expect it, just make it possible
At two to five, almost no child actually snorkels, and there is no reason to push it. If you do want to try, there is one thing to know: an adult mask does not seal on a small face. It fills with water, the child gets a fright, and after that the subject is closed for the rest of the holiday.
Whether a children’s snorkel mask is on board is a question to ask before you book. Bringing your own costs little and often decides whether it works at all. On the dust that comes with every desert tour: bring a cloth for the face and your own sunglasses or goggles, because sand in the eye can quickly end the evening for a child.
The time of day matters more than the programme

Food: bring something you know will get eaten
The big day trips often include lunch. What exactly is served is rarely stated in the short description, and a child this age famously eats what it recognises – or nothing at all.

Three things we would not book at this age
The quad bike with a toddler. Operators set their own limits differently – none of the short descriptions of our 224 Hurghada listings states a minimum age; the conditions are on the individual booking page. Whatever is allowed there, this is our opinion and we will say it plainly: a two- to five-year-old does not belong on a quad bike. The camel ride from the same tour is the better part of it.
Luxor or Cairo in a day. Luxor is around 300 kilometres away by road, for which the local operator HurghadaToGo reckons on four to six hours each way; Cairo is around 450 kilometres, and the coach trip there is listed at at least 15 hours. The dolphin trip as a promise. The dolphins at the Sha’ab El Erg reef are wild, and there are days without them. At this age, a child does not yet understand “maybe” as a possibility – only as a promise. If you go, tell them beforehand that it might happen, not that it will: Dolphins in Hurghada.
