Desert Trips with Kids in Hurghada: What Operators Confirm – and What They Don't

Updated October 3, 2026 · 7 min read

Two camels carrying children and an adult walk across the sand beside the sea, a handler leading them

In short. For most families, the one-hour camel ride through the desert and along the beach with transfers works best – two hours including the drive, from €29.25, 4.7 from 196 reviews, and the operator itself describes it as a relaxed family outing in the fresh air: see dates and prices for the camel ride. The cheapest option is an hour in the saddle: horse riding on the Red Sea beach and in the desert with transfer from €10.80: see prices for the horse ride. If your kids are older and want something with an engine, look at the desert quad bike ride with a camel ride and barbecue – but you’ll need to ask about the age limit separately, and we explain why below: see the quad bike and barbecue programme.

The most important thing missing from the listings

Not a single listing in the desert safari overview – and there are 70 of them from €7.57 – states a minimum age. Not for the quad bike, not for the buggy, not for the camel, not for the horse. We won’t invent a “usual” cut-off here: a made-up number sounds convincing and sends parents to the meeting point only to be told something different.

So there’s only one honest way: ask the operator on the booking page and get the answer in writing, with the age and height of each child. The same goes for whether a driving licence is needed for the quad bike and whether a child can ride as a second passenger – none of this is in the listings. The same logic applies on the water – how that looks there is covered here: boat trips with kids: from what age.

Who’s driving – and why that’s the first question with kids

With kids, the difference between these rows matters more than the price. Where you’re driving yourself, the child either doesn’t come along at all or rides as a passenger – and that’s exactly what no listing states. Where a handler, guide or the operator’s driver is in control, the question answers itself and only the duration is left to weigh up.

Camel: the family is named directly in the listing

In the listing for the one-hour camel ride, the operator writes about a relaxed family outing in the fresh air and friendly guides. That’s not a promise and not a confirmed age limit, but among several dozen programmes in the overview, only a few name the family this directly – and that gives the conversation with the operator a clearer starting point.

The total duration is two hours; the ride itself is listed as one hour. The rest is the drive from the hotel and back. For a child who tires quickly from heat and from sitting in a car, that ratio works out better than a six-hour safari with only a short ride inside it.

There’s also a programme whose name addresses couples and families directly: horse ride and swim for couples and families with transfer, three hours from €28. It has no reviews yet, so we can’t say how it plays out in practice – and we won’t put it ahead of the proven options.

Horses: cheaper, but more open questions with kids

Horse rides are the cheapest programmes in this group: one hour from €10.80, two hours with the option to swim from €13.20 at 4.9 from 1,139 reviews. For the second one, the operator writes that it suits beginners and experienced riders alike; for the desert-and-sea ride, that it’s built for any level of experience. Those are the operator’s words, not a fact we’ve checked, and they don’t automatically apply to a child.

Ask whether the horse will walk alongside a guide or whether the child rides unaccompanied, and whether a helmet is provided. None of these points is stated in the listings.

How long a child will last

The overview has programmes lasting one hour and programmes lasting seven. The seven-hour Super Safari with quad bike, camel ride and barbecue costs from €19.77 – less than the one-hour camel ride. For a child, that’s not a bargain, it’s a long day of dust, transfers and waiting between stops.

The rule is simple: with young children, choose the programme where the actual activity takes up most of the time, not the cheapest one per hour. How to work that out for a whole day is covered here: half-day trips with kids. We also have separate guides by age – with a toddler, with kids aged 6–10 and with teenagers.

Evening, heat and food

Evening desert programmes finish late – that’s the point, not a flaw. With kids who’ll want the sea the next morning, it’s best not to schedule such an evening before an early outing day. If dinner is part of the programme, ask exactly what’s served and whether there’s an option for a child who won’t eat barbecue; what actually works for eating with kids in Hurghada is covered here: eating with kids.

On sun and drinking water: we won’t name any products or doses here. Sun protection for a child in the desert is a question for a pharmacy or a paediatrician before the trip, and it’s better to ask at home than on site. As for the programme itself, there’s only one question to ask: whether the site has shade and a toilet.

Five questions before you pay

First: from what age children are accepted on this specific programme. Second: whether a child can ride as a passenger if an adult is driving. Third: whether the site has shade and a toilet. Fourth: what time you’ll be brought back to the hotel. Fifth: whether dinner is included in the starting price or paid for on site.

The answers to these five questions matter more than the choice between a camel and a quad bike. And if the operator gives an evasive answer to the first one, that’s an answer in itself.

Our recommendation

With kids, take the one-hour camel ride with transfer. It’s short, the child never drives, the operator itself calls it family-friendly, and two hours total doesn’t eat into the day at the sea. The extra cost compared with the horse ride is €18.45 per person – the price for having a handler walking alongside the child.

If your kids are teenagers and want exactly the engine-powered option, read our comparison of the vehicles: quad bike, buggy or jeep – but confirm the age limit with the operator in writing regardless. And if the desert doesn’t appeal that day, the other family options are gathered here: Hurghada with kids.
